"The Roman Trials of Jesus" - John 18:28-40. |
John 18Jesus' Trial Before Pilate28 So they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters, and it was early morning. But they did not enter the headquarters themselves; in order that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 Then Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?" 30 In reply they said to him, "If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you." 31 So Pilate told them, "You take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It's not lawful for us to put anyone to death." 32 This was to fulfill the statement of Jesus, which He made to indicate what sort of death He was going to die. 33 Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" 34 Jesus answered him, "Are you saying this on your own, or have others told you about Me?" Pilate replied, 35 "I'm not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?" 36 "My kingdom is not of this world," Jesus answered. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. But in fact My kingdom does not have its source here." 37 So Pilate said to Him, "You are a king then?" "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice." 38 Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" Jesus or Barabbas? And when he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "I find absolutely no grounds for charging Him. 39 But You have a custom that I release one man to you at the Passover. So do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?" 40 Then they all shouted back, "Not this fellow, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a bandit. |
